As students come back to an ever increasing technology reliant school, a portable computer is an invaluable tool for many, especially for those who are heading to college. For many people, buying a computer can be a daunting task, when not knowing the value or terminology, so I have compiled a list of laptops at different price points as well as differing needs. Disclaimer: Macs are, in my opinion, a terrible value for the specifications vs price, and software limitations so none will be included in this list. 1. Chromebook acer c710 Coming in at an affordable $189, this laptop comes with the most basic of features that one would expect for something at this price point. Not much can be done with this computer as it runs Google's proprietary operating system, so it can only run a few apps from the play store, use all of Google Drive and run a few websites like Youtube and Netflix as well as a few social media websites. Anything more intensive will struggle with this computer’s weak low power intel atom dual core processor with only 2gbs of ram. Not much could be stored on it with only 16 total gigabytes of storage. Its small size at 11.6” makes it portable, but with a 1366x 768 resolution screen, it is by no means the laptop of professionals. 2. Dell Inspiron 15 A step up at $380, the Dell Inspiron 15-5000 is a nice Windows laptop that has much more function than a Chromebook. As it is running a full functioning version of Windows 10, the list of programs available is limitless and familiar to most. With a 15.6”touch screen, webcam and a respectable, low power i3-7100u, it is a good pick for a student who would like to use it for both homework and conversing with friends over Skype. With 6gb of ram, running multiple internet tabs should be no problem, and with 1 terabyte of storage, pictures and movies could easily be stored in this laptop. 3. Lenovo Y520 For those who enjoy more heavy and intensive workloads like video production or playing video games, the terms affordable and laptop do not usually mix well, but the lenovo y520 coming in at anywhere from $800-$930 is a great option. Sporting a powerful i5-7300hq processor and being the only laptop on this list having a dedicated graphics card being the gtx 1050 ti with 4gbs of dedicated vram, make this laptop an incredible value. With a full HD 15.6’ display and speakers that are often described as incredible, this laptop is targeted to people who enjoy playing on their computer and being able to use it for photo editing and video production. It has 8gb of system ram and 256gb of super fast pcie storage. Some people may be turned off by the external aesthetic of red glow as it seems too unprofessional, but others see it as sleek. 4. Lg Gram 13 The 2017 Lg Gram is one of the most innovative laptops on this list. It is revolutionary, as the name suggests, because of its light weight coming in at less than 2 pounds, making it easy to carry. One thing that isn't so easy to carry is the price tag at $3 short of one grand. For the extra $100 off the y520, you lose 3 pounds and a dedicated graphics card, severely limiting its processing performance. However, you gain a touch screen and an extremely sleek and professional aesthetic that would feel just as in place in a classroom, office, or just a dorm. Its main selling point is its portability. 5. Microsoft Surface Book 1590 For those who are entering a profession in the arts, this choice is impossible to beat. The stylus and versatility make this laptop convertible tablet starting around $1000 an artist’s dream. This laptop is very configurable in terms of specifications, so it is hard to pinpoint what kind of power you will get, but the maxed out configuration will set you back an arm, a leg, and car at $3200, but will give you a laptop that can don almost anything. With an i7 processor 1 terabyte of storage, a dedicated gpu, and many other features, this laptop is unbeatable.
